Who We Are
About Citadel
Citadel is a not-for-profit, member-owned credit union that exists to serve people, businesses, and communities so they can prosper.
For nearly 90 years, we’ve delivered a full range of financial services to our members — and as we’ve grown, we continue to reinvest resources back into our members and the communities we serve through charitable giving and volunteerism. With over $6.5 billion in assets, we are now one of the largest locally owned financial institutions in the Greater Philadelphia area.
Our History
We were founded by the hardworking people of Southeast Pennsylvania, and as we’ve grown, we continue to serve and support the communities around us. We are building strength together, and we’ve only just begun.
What is a credit union, and who can join?
We’re not a bank! Credit unions are considered “financial cooperatives,” which means everyone who joins is a more than a customer — they’re a member-owner. It also means you must meet certain eligibility criteria in order to join.
Today, anyone can open an account with us if they live in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Maryland, and West Virginia. You may also be eligible for membership through your family or work. Not sure if you’re eligible? Here’s who can join.

Why is every new member required to open a savings account?
Our goal is to help you build financial strength — and as part of that commitment, each new member must deposit $1 into a Citadel savings account in order to join. Think of it as an initial investment in building your financial future. This deposit allows you to vote in our board elections and take advantage of all the other resources, services, and money-saving discounts our credit union has to offer.
As long as you remain a member, we’ll hold the dollar in your account, and you can continue to save as you see fit. If you decide to close your account, you’ll take that money with you when you go… but we have a feeling you’ll want to stick around!
