Citadel Heart of Learning Awards Honors Most Inspiring Teachers Throughout Greater Philadelphia

2025 honorees celebrated for their extraordinary service, passion, and leadership.

EXTON, Pa., May 5, 2025 — Citadel Credit Union has announced the 2025 recipients of the Citadel Heart of Learning Awards (CHOLA), recognizing 32 exceptional teachers from across Citadel’s Greater Philadelphia region footprint, including Bucks, Chester, Montgomery, Lancaster, Delaware, and Philadelphia Counties. With this year’s distribution of over $85,000 in grants, a 44% increase over last year, Citadel continues its 24-year commitment to strengthening education through community support, nearing $600,000 in total grants given.

The Citadel Heart of Learning Awards, launched in 2001 in partnership with the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU), honors teachers who go above and beyond in their dedication to students and the classroom. Thousands of nominations are submitted each year by students, parents, and colleagues—and only a select few are chosen for the prestigious recognition of impact, compassion, and excellence.

The award is a key part of the Citadel Cares program, Citadel’s broader community giving initiative focused on building strength and prosperity across Greater Philadelphia. Through this program, Citadel donates funds and volunteer support in the key pillars of Financial Literacy, Education, Community & Economic Development, and Health & Wellness—making the Heart of Learning Awards a natural extension of Citadel’s mission to uplift and empower the communities it serves.

The Citadel Heart of Learning Award continues to evolve as Citadel aims to demonstrate the reach of its Citadel Cares program across the region. Consistent with prior years, each of the 32 award recipients received a signature hand-blown glass heart and a $1,000 grant. New to the program this year, one grand prize winner was selected per county, each of which also had at least four additional winners. The six Grand Prize winners, double the number of winners, from previous years’ three grand prize winners, received $5,000 personally, along with an additional $5,000 awarded to their school. Citadel also awarded the Traci Watson Heart Award, established in 2021 in memory of a beloved Citadel colleague who played a pivotal role in the program, to one recipient who demonstrated thoughtful creativity, inspiring good nature, and unwavering dedication to their craft.

Meet the 2025 Grand Prize Winners

Justin Fachet – 3rd Grade Teacher, Tinicum Elementary School (Bucks County)

A beloved figure in both the classroom and on the baseball field, Mr. Fachet is known for his ability to draw out the best in his students academically and emotionally. With a smile always on his face, he creates a respectful, supportive classroom where students thrive. He’s also a mentor and coach at Palisades High School, instilling teamwork and service through sports and community events.

An excerpt from a nomination: "I am thrilled to nominate Mr. Fachet for the Citadel Heart of Learning Award. He has been an incredible influence on my son, who thrived in his class and considered him his favorite teacher. As my son’s first male teacher, Mr. Fachet had a unique and lasting impact, creating a learning environment where he felt supported, motivated, and inspired."

Jackie Mavrelos – Gifted Support Teacher, Oxford Area High School (Chester County)

Mrs. Mavrelos, affectionately known as “Mrs. Mav,” is a source of support and inspiration at Oxford Area High School. She blends challenging curriculum with personal mentorship, helping students explore college and career paths, refine essays, and navigate life with confidence. Mrs. Mavrelos also helps lead the Student Assistance Team and regularly makes an effort to attend extracurricular activities her students are participating in.

Mrs. Mav has worked tirelessly to ensure my academic and personal success throughout high school. She is the teacher that I am most grateful for."

Stacey Kucera – 3rd Grade Teacher, Chester Charter Scholars Academy (Delaware County)

With 20 years of teaching experience, Mrs. Kucera has created a classroom that serves as a second home for her students. She goes beyond academics, meeting her students’ basic and emotional needs—whether that means providing school supplies, clothing, or a safe space. Her annual classroom award ceremony helps every student see their unique worth, building confidence and connection in meaningful ways.

Teresa Ashby – Kindergarten Teacher, Lafayette Elementary (Lancaster County)

Mrs. Ashby is described by colleagues and parents alike as the heart of Lafayette Elementary. She creates a nurturing, inclusive space where students are treated like family and supported holistically—academically, emotionally, and even materially. From providing snacks and clothing to adapting her lessons for every student’s needs, her commitment to children’s growth is unmatched.

Her passion for teaching is undeniable. Her encouragement and belief in her students’ potential inspire them to reach new heights, instilling confidence that lasts a lifetime."

Teresa Straffin – Autistic Support Teacher (K-2), Enfield Elementary (Montgomery County)

Ms. Straffin's work in special education is rooted in compassion and excellence. She adapts lessons creatively, supports both students and aides, and tirelessly advocates for inclusion. Whether she’s modifying curriculum, helping families access resources, or coaching adaptive soccer on weekends, her impact is felt far beyond the classroom walls.

An excerpt from a nomination: "She makes sure her students are included in general education yet she finds ways for them to shine in front of their peers. Teresa teaches from a strength-based perspective & her students feel competent and independent. She is fun, creative, and thoughtful. She puts in long hard days and late nights modifying curriculum to make sure the needs of her students are met and that they are learning. She provides support for the families of her students and finds them necessary resources. She is a team player, makes team members feel valued, & she carries over strategies provided by related services on a daily basis…She is amazing!"

Erica DeVose – 7th/8th Grade ELA Teacher, Eliza B. Kirkbride (Philadelphia County)

Ms. DeVose is an undeniable advocate for student voice and success. Through creative, relatable projects, she builds literacy and confidence—often helping students overcome language barriers and preparing them for high school and beyond. She also mentors students outside the classroom, helping them land summer jobs and encouraging their personal growth.
